Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

Youll only see movement if the chick happens to move right when youre looking. thats why it is not an accurate method for determining signs of life. This test was meant to be used with very rare, expensive, or fragile eggs to determine if they are indeed worth incubating.

Yes keep the water incubator temperature or as close as possible.

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

No one ever reads through this thread. Probably 30 times or more ive posted on this thread that only thing a float test can tell you is if your eggs are fresh. You can occasionally detect signs of life but this not an accurate method for doing so.

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

Please read back 8-10 pages on this thread before dunking your eggs. I really wish the mods would put a note on it or something... The only thing a float test can accurately tell you is how fresh an egg is. Thats all. It can incidentally show signs of life but there is no real accuracy to that...

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

A hen will remain fertile for 7-14 days after a single breeding.

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

Bill and I have probably said about half a million times on this thread that float testing is only a way to check the freshness of an egg, it is not an accurate way to check for signs of life. All float testing will tell you is the air sac in the egg is intact.

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

I wish this thread was started differently than it was. Float testing is not a valid way to check for signs of life. It will only tell you whether or not the egg you're floating is fresh.

I dont recommend ever assisting. If they cant make it out of the shell on their own they probably werent fit to in the first place.

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

I wish this post was the second one on this thread. Read from page 28-29 to page 31 and you should get a better understanding of what exactly a float test can tell you.

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

Did you read the post by Fat Daddy that I quoted? Wait another day, if nothing hatches throw them out and start over. Something was wrong with your temp/humidity etc. Double check all your thermometers with two others. Float testing will not tell you whether or not eggs will hatch, it will...

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

If she's sitting on coturnix eggs and she's on day 21 i'd only give her another day or two then toss them all. It is possible that temps were low or due to her feeding and the eggs cooling, that they'll take a little longer than 17-19 days. When they hatch you will need to remove them...

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

At day 24 I would throw out all eggs. Anything that might hatch will not be properly developed. If you keep track over a year of all the birds that dont hatch easy and on time, you'll find a lot them were culls. Honestly float testing like this is something best done as a learning experiment...

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

The peeping you hear is the chicks organizing the hatch time. They are finding out who is ready so they mostly all go at the same time.

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

As long as she is getting up to eat and drink it's ok to let her try again. Just check to make sure she hasn't been losing weight this round.

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

If they don't hatch and you want to break her off brooding the easiest way I know of is to put the hen in a wire bottomed cage with no nesting material for a few days. Once she realizes cool air will always come through the floor her body understands it has no hope of hatching eggs and she...

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

You can see why as their experience level with hatching goes up most people stop messing around with candling and float tests. The more you handle them the more chances you have to mess up. It's still a valuable part of learning to be a good hatcher though.
