DL in the run works. DL in the coop works with wood/vinyl/dirt floor.

They will be spreading it out and digging and rolling around in it soon :)

I think you and your chickens will be just fine! Most folks here who use leaves and grass clippings make sure there is not pesticide or herbicide on it, so something to be considered. I even asked about "are pine cones ok" a while back and was assured that they were :). The more variation in...

what are the heightxwidthxdepth? How deep can you actually pile shavings in there? 6 inches? Looking for the floor dimensions... Chickens like to take dustbaths. That is what they need. A whiskey barrel full of sand and topsoil and peat moss and wood ash would help a small flock. Make or buy a...

I actually do this in my covered run. In the coop itself, which is small, I have a poop tray with sweet PDZ that I scoop out and add to my compost pile, and a heavy layer of pine shavings. That layer gets moved out into the run twice a year. Yes you can throw dry bedding on the wet stuff. If...

Yes! Pile it in there and let chickens mix and distribute. Keeps them busy which is good. Mine keep me from working too hard! And. I am taking some of their mix from last year out of the run and now adding a cupful or two around my garden plants and herbs before adding some more mulch to top off...

    Deep litter method

The more of a mix of different items the better. As long as the clippings aren't too wet or clumpy, the chickens will love spreading them out. Works in my climate. I had a major wind recently bring down many small pine cones and duff, and those will be raked and added to the mix as well (helps...

Right I am not sure I see the point of adding DE to grains for chickens. Some folks use DE on the deep litter. Most don't as it can kill the exact beneficial microbes you are trying to encourage. That is to say, DE is not necessary for deep litter and might actually keep it from composting properly.

Here is what I would do. I would add some compost or failing that, topsoil on top of the sand, at least an inch, maybe two. Then I would add all the deep litter stuff. The chickens should mix it up and as long as there isn't too much sand, it should all just mix in via "chicken labor". And no...

Also consider the Woods Coop (you can research it with a search of the forum) because the ventilation will be welcome in Georgia. And there is a very large floor, good for DL IMHO.

I would use pine shaving in the coop, and deep litter in the run in that setup...you can do deep litter in a coop, but IMHO it needs to be quite a bit bigger. I have a small coop and when I clean out the pine shavings etc it all goes in the run along with yard waste, shredded paper (lol) and etc!

    Deep litter method

LOL! I shred light cardboard like toilet paper tubes or cracker boxes, along with paper, and just dump it in the middle of the run...the chickens spread it out! Heavier cardboard, I might just tear it up a bit and see how it goes...

    Deep litter method

Don't forget shredded paper and cardboard as one more material...I have reduced my trash by about 2/3 by shredding junk mail and light cardboard. When I throw it occasionally into deep litter, the chickens just make it disappear! Nice layout btw!

You can remove the surface, or you can break it up and mix it in with what is beneath.

And of course they will turn it for you if you toss a heap of stuff in there...they will spread it out very neatly! Sometimes I toss a bit of scratch or BOSS in there and they will turn the top few inches, sometimes, they dig WAY down and turn it more! Silly birds do all the work!
