Funny you should mention broodies, CoChix. I need some advice on how to break a persistent broody. She is my best laying hen, high in the pecking order and most of the other girls seem to want to mimic her most of the time. She has never taken more than 3 days to break in the past but she is...

Well, today I got my four 6-week-old BO's integrated with the rest of the flock. Went pretty seamless because the've all been in the coop together for a couple weeks but separated by a chicken wire partition. The youngers get frequent pecks from the older BA's and PBR's but nothing too rough...

I was thinking about 1/2" but after skimping on materials the first time I started thinking about overkill. :) Definitely not load bearing, though. A larger lid should help. The original barely covered the box.

All this rain has revealed some deficiences in my nest boxes. They rarely leaked two years ago when I built the coop but I used thin maple paneling because it was free and now that paneling is warping and making huge gaps. I have to rebuild the whole nest box section with real 3/4" plywood...

Got broody mayhem here too. I gave chicks to a broody earlier this month but she failed to accept them so I've been raising them in a brooder indoors. Now, the hen I hoped would become broody because she did such a great job last year has finally decided it's time to raise chicks. Too late...

Since Danica brought up the subject of wild ducks spreading disease I've been worried about the H5N2 that's been going around this year. I'm not sure what to do in terms of added biosecurity other than not showing my chickens off to every visitor that comes to my house. This strain kills birds...

It's a week later than I wanted but I got the carrots and radishes planted today. I had to do a bit of chicken-proofing in the strawberry patch. Yesterday the whole flock got in there and really tore up the plants that were starting to grow again. Hopefully the roots are ok and they'll grow back.

Some minor disappointment this week. The broody I thought would adopt some new chicks has failed. At first she took them under her and all seemed to be going well but she wouldn't let them out to eat or drink and wouldn't even try to leave the nest to take care of her own needs. I eventually...

Well it looks like I finally got a broody like I wanted. I put some fake eggs in one of the nest boxes two weeks ago and one of the BA's finally decided to sit on them. She spent all yesterday and all night on them and gave me the worst stink eye I've ever seen this morning. I'll try to get a...

Hey Peeps. Hope you're all doing well. I haven't posted here in quite a while. Something called life keeps getting in the way. I'm getting 4 Buff Orpingtons from Kiowa on April 4th and I'm wondering if any of you have an opinion of the breed. Everything I've read says they are good layers...

I just had my first loss from--I'm certain, as she exhibited all the symptoms--coccidiosis. I've been treating her and the whole flock with corid and I wonder if I should keep the everyone on the meds for a time. Also, does anybody know if I should discard the eggs until the meds clear from...

Anybody interested in a Barred Rock rooster? He's 9 weeks old and a real sweetie but I can't keep him. Asking $5 for anyone who wants to give him a good home or maybe just have him over for dinner PM me if you're interested.

I had the same thing happen to me with a 1974 AMC Matador. I swapped out 2 starters that I thought were bad until I figured out that the car wouldn't start because of safety switch in the shift column that keeps the starter from getting juice unless it's in Park or Neutral. Things had gotten a...

Well I guess I was due for one. They claim 90% accuracy on sexing and that was my 10th bird :)

It looks like my broody hen has stopped mothering the chicks after 4 weeks. One night she went to roost with the rest of the flock, leaving the babies alone and confused in their nest box so I took her down and put her in the box when it got dark. She reluctantly stayed with the chicks that...

The whole flock seems to be getting along so I'm going to take down the partition in the coop and see how they handle spending the night together. Hopefully the mom stays with her chicks to keep them warm and doesn't go straight for the roost now that she can reach it. The chicks had a great...

So I've had my broody and her chicks in the coop for 3 weeks now and I'm wondering when I can take out the chicken-wire partition to allow them access to the run and more room to roam? The rest of the flock has been able to see the chicks every day and have even free ranged with them in the...
