To worm or not to worm that is the question.

Ya never know, you could patent it, call it "Casportponys Wonder Wormer"! I was totally being serious! You have the capabilities right there, why knock it if you haven't tried it? ;) Well, I use the chickens to add beneficial microbes and nutrients in pasture and permaculture type settings...
  2. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

That's what the look see at a little clump.of soil here and there can do.. I borrow the $15 microscope kit of the kids and look at the soil..since that's where most worms and eggs actually come from, poorly managed poo impacted soil ;)
  3. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

You should do that! Get it published too so we can quit debating all the other science that's been put out there on that. We've only been going in circles on it for 2 years :D
  4. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

Cucumbers are related to pumpkins, so I would venture to guess that the entire curcubits family has anthelmintic properties in the seeds. Natural wormer ;)
  5. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

No you're not in the minority. I thought we were talking about worming, not the facts of life. Things die. Birds die, cows die, we die. Most folks here are hobby chicken keepers, not vets in training. Some will lose one bird and not bat an eyelash, where someone else may spend hundreds of...
  6. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

Yep, except I would prefer dolomite lime over agricultural lime, as dolomite is organic and will buffer the ph up to 7, neutral, without possibly toxifying the soil. I would also incorporate something like greensand or humus; azomite or leonardite are great sources, and are organic so if the...
  7. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

Bee gave great suggestions to try; I'd probably do that too, mulch the area and try to improve the texture of the soil; the PH is going to be acidic from all the pine needles, which is actually a good thing, but the moisture excess is causing fungal overgrowth, sounds like. You can use that...
  8. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

Just to answer you quickly, I breed for resistance and have a closed flock, so if they aren't actually resistant to cocci, which is everywhere, then they get culled. I have to add, for anything "natural" to work, ie pumpkin, cayenne, garlic, etc, the WHOLE ENVIRONMENT has to be healthy...
  9. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

IMO, @Teila and @Beekissed both bring up excellent points... However, its not "to cull or not to cull"... But it is an important discussion, because if you don't practice good husbandry 110% of the time, worms and illness and poor health will " cull" them for you. :( I LOVE my chooks. Love...
  10. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

Well, most of what you just stated is exactly what I do ;) Cleanliness, fresh water daily, good quality fresh feed, which I ferment for the benefit if the microbes to keep their gut flora healthy; I have been known to dose their water with raw ACV in summer when they're out eating worm loaded...
  11. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

I liken it to the mantra, "an ounce if PREVENTION is worth a pound of CURE." ;) I'd rather prevent them than "treat" on a regular basis, with chemicals that do not belong in the food chain. I guess since I work harder on preventing them, which seems to have been successful for the last 37...
  12. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

I'm hoping that is a typo? Ringworm is a fungus; a wormer will do nothing for ringworm;) Maybe it was supposed to say "roundworm"? ;) Lol it SOUNDS like an individual that can't say "I've had worms and beat them with such and such" would not be any kind if definitive proof that natural...

Well I'll wait and see if Bee digs up those articles again @Ridgerunner before I try to find them... Lol I can tell you what microbe to use to kill mosquito larvae but I can't work a computer or cell phone without wanting to throw it in the creek ha-ha :P By I did dig up some stuff on...
  15. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

Well, in my book, that's the start of it. God takes care of them, the chickens. And He takes care if th worms. They have a place in life too, and they actually have a role to play, so eradicating them, plus whatever else might be eradicated in the process is not trusting God ;) Ok now that...
  16. shortgrass

To worm or not to worm that is the question.

Me either... Not for 20 years yet lol, but still have never wormed any of our livestock other than show animals and the dogs and cats ;) Well, I guess I DO worm, but not with chemicals. I depend on "nature to nurture", using the medicinal value of certain vegetation and timing if grazing to...
