That's so funny. Mine hate the diced, can only be whole.
If you still want to get them on pellets, try putting them in one of those Lixit treat balls. That makes it kind of a fun, novelty thing that they have to work for. They might be more accepting of a transition later on after having...
Once I made the mistake of sprinkling a few grubs into their 7lb feeder. I swear they would have beaked the whole thing if I hadn't intervened! Glad you found a solution. Ours love fermented feed.
Try making it into a mash (add hot water until thick oatmeal consistency). I've gotten this tip so many times on here, and for good reason. If the birds eat it, then you can call their bluff. The food is likely fine.
I've also had mine go on food strikes when they decide their measured treats...
I didn't start treating until about 12 weeks, and mine can be stubborn trying new foods. Will take your advice and start earlier next time! Maybe 3-4 weeks when they start exploring outside?
And it smells so fresh and good!
I tried a new bedtime snack that had little bits of dried carrot peel. They avoided it like the plague. But again, earlier today they were eating GIANT CHUNKS OF WOOD.
Whatever... :he
Oh my gosh, I've thrown out more pounds of chicken feed than I care to admit.
"Surely, they must sense there's something bad about the feed!"
Nope. They're just picky jerks. Put the same food in a little hot water, and suddenly it's safe to consume. I couldn't get them to eat a piece of...
Of course! How silly of me. Unfortunately, I won't be able to dispense any treats when I'm in the hospital because their cecal-crusted nails scratched my cornea!
No joke, I'm getting them an automatic treat dispenser for Christmas.
Right now, they're grounded with no treats for at least a week. But normally I do limit them, exactly as you said (even have my handy 3/8 cup for 3 birds!) 👍
Do chickens tantrum? They're not handling their treat ban very well. I just went in to clean up poops, and one had the nerve to fly at...
2 out of 3 are laying (3rd is coming up soon!), but my Golden Comet eats an unnatural amount of oyster shell. I assumed layer feed would help her with calcium levels. They all LOVE the Dumor Organic Layer, but flat-out refuse every other brand. It's kind of a head scratcher.
I do provide...
Chickens against nutrition! Do they need a little butter on it too? 😝
If I dare to chop the veggies or present them in a dish, they're ruined. Veggies must be offered in their full form, trapped in a suspended cage, only to be slowly pecked to death by my little sickos. It must be cathartic...
I don't understand how an animal with a handful of tastebuds can be so selective when it comes to chicken food. There's no rhyme or reason to it either, especially with 95% of commercial feed ingredients starting with "corn, soy, wheat, etc."
My girls enjoy Nutrena Chick Crumble and All-Flock...
