Hello fellow chicken keepers! I currently have a mana hen brooding 3 chicks that are two weeks old. Right now I have them fenced into the loafing shed since about 4 days after they hatched we lost a chick who fell into our goat's water trough

. You can tell mama wants to take the babies out exploring but I'm afraid of losing more to drowning. Our chickens share a large pasture with goats and ducks. We have two large plastic swimming pools that serve as duck ponds and a large tub of water for our goats. At what age do you think it would be safe to let these babies out into the pasture? I've only ever brooded my own chicks before so never had to worry about this since they were 3-4 months old before integrated with the flock. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

We keep ours in a pen at night, tractor outside during the day, with mom until they are six or seven weeks old. At that age (6 or 7 weeks) they are still young enough to follow mom, and she can teach them things, but old enough to avoid some of the problems younger chicks would have.

I let our broodies take their chicks out when they're ready, which is usually when they're a few days old. We have a small duck "pond" in our run. One of my broodies chicks fell into it the other day, and managed to make its way back out thanks to the ramp. I have 2 pavers in the water to help the ducks get in and out, and they've saved quite a few chickens that have fallen or been pushed in (usually by the ducks :p ). You might just put little chicken ramps in all of the deep water sources. And cross your fingers that they just don't fall in.

Good luck!
