can you carry a starter pistol or something? Fireworks? That was broad daylight! Folks out here use motion sensor strobe lights with siren to scare off 2 and 4 legged predators at night.

That would be a nightmare to get chased. Pray that day never happens. I need to carry around something cause it was like 10:00 in the morning and he was out.

It might not if it's the low power type used for dogs, etc. In Fla, we used a cattle charger with 4 strand heavy gauge wire. It kept 1000 lb horses in and wild boar out.

Well my friend, that was the problem! There was no planning! I was maybe 12 or 13. The signs posted everywhere said DON"T feed the bears! I thought they would walk away like the do at the zoo. NOT! Babies got too close to me. I swear, I will never ever forget it. That momma bear would have mauled me for sure.

Mutt Farm to funny. Glad you survived childhood.

Well I finally ventured out to the coop yesterday after my hubby got home from work and got a coat of oops paint put on it. Didn't see a bear yesterday but did see deer. 2 when I was driving home from getting my kids from school and a while later another 2 in my back yard where the bear had been the day before. I just hope the trend in seeing animals I have never before seen continues cause if it does next animal on the list would be a cougar. I think I would rather see the bear again over the cougar. Lol

It looks so plain and boring. I have to get some trim pieces for around the windows and whatnot.

I still have to make the run and do roosts and nest boxes, but they are still young although time is ticking and they are growing like weeds. In the mean time here are a few pics of the babies. One of them is still super small but eats like a horse. Think I will be naming her squirt or Dory cause she kind of derp lol.

It's fun having chicks around. We're just working on our coop now too, but definitely want to split it down the middle so next spring I can add to my flock! We have lots of mountain lions around here, but no bears. I would think the mountain lion would be more threat to chickens than a bear, but again we don't have bears so I don't know what they'd all go after. Anything that eats meat would obviously take an easy meal though. Anyway, good work on the coop. Practical is way more important than pretty! Your girls will love it and it'll keep them safe, that's all that matters!

Was busy today finally got to work on the run. Ran out of wire though :/ The bottom portion is 1/4" hardware cloth and the top is chicken wire cause that is what I had. As soon as my truck is fixed I will get the remaining pieces I need. Hopefully it's soon cause the girls are getting big.

I have made some more progress. I finished the run the day after my last post and the girls were beside themselves with happiness. The past 2 days I have been working on the nesting boxes and am almost done. I still have a few things to add and need to paint it.
