Hello, have been lurking here for a while and have really enjoyed reading everything.

I was out of town for a few days and my wife has been taking care of the chicks but didn't have time to put them out in a temp run until I get the coop finished. I noticed some of them have bare patches on their back that I don't recall being there. Is this one of the last places to feather out or could they have gotten bored and picked?

it is like this in the same spot on all the ones like this leadin me to believe it is the way they feather out.

they are almost 6 weeks old.

Thanks!

IMO feather pecking. They will be bare bottomed until there first adult molt next year.

Better get to work and finish that coop so they will have more room

In the meantime, get one of those baby chick forage cakes to hang in there so they will have something to peck at keep them occupied.

Thanks! The coops is getting close hopefully can move them in this weekend. And I can move them outside for good parts of the day now that I am home.

When do you think they will molt? They are six weeks old and if I understand correctly they usually molt as the days get shorter. Would they molt this fall or next fall? I am worried about them getting sunburn next summer.

Also made some homemade forage cakes last night. Gatta love my wife, she let me bake freeze dried meal worms in the oven lol.
Thanks!
