I have a hen that just started today acting very tired, standing with her eyes closed and stands with her feathers puffed out and isn't eating or drinking much. I held her on my lap and she just laid there with her eyes closed. Anyone have any idea what may be wrong? There isn't any other signs like runny eyes or beak. I have felt her stomach and it doesn't feel hard.

How old is she? Coccidiosis can be a problem in younger chickens up to around 20 weeks old, but can be a problem in older ones if they are exposed to new birds added to the flock, or if they have an immunity problem. Corid is the best treatment for cocci. Has she been wormed? Will she eat some chopped egg or drink water with electrolytes and vitamins? Is she having diarrhea or blood in her droppings? Corid is in the cattle medicines at feed stores. Dosage is 2 tsp of the liquid, or 1.5 tsp of the powder per gallon of water for 5-7 days, and I would treat all the birds with her if you decide that is what she may have.

Thank you for your reply, she is about a year or so. She seems a little better tonight so I will keep a close eye on her. Don't think there is any blood, I looked when she went potty and didn't see any but it was watery. They haven't been wormed yet but I did get wormer and intend to do that soon.

You may want to check inside her vent 1-2 inches with a finger (use a rubber glove) to feel for a stuck egg. I would think about treating for cocci.

I checked but no egg could be felt, I started giving her electrolytes and her poop is still clear runny with white in it. She ate a little bit of scratch from my hand but not much. She just wants to lay around.

There are 9 or more strains of coccidia that affect chickens. Two or three cause blood, but the others may just cause diarrhea. Corid is not dangerous, and not an antibiotic if you choose to use it.

Well my poor little hen died this morning, everyone else seems fine, if I notice anyone else getting droopy I will treat them all. Do you have to withdraw from the eggs when using Corid?
