Hi all, I have a Barred Rock hen that just lost her close friend yesterday. She is acting strange, yesterday by not leaving the coop and was picking up sticks grass ect. and tossing them. This morning the coop was full of her feathers. She still is hanging around tossing things. Does anyone have any ideas of what is going on. She stopped laying last week when her friend started getting weak. Thanks in advance.

Chickens do form bonds of companionship/friendship, and they do miss close flock mates that leave for one reason or another. It sounds like a combination of this plus initiation of the molt. Do you have other chickens for companionship?

No unfortunately not. The only thing I have left is a one eyed small chick about 6 to 7 weeks old.( Friends found her and gave her to me.) I am wondering if I should get an older hen so that she has a companion, until the chick is old enough to be introduced to her.
Thank you for the reply, Wasn't sure if I was crazy or the hen.

How old is she?
Have you tried to introduce the chick to her...or at least house the chick near her separated by wire?

The hen is about 3, and have the chick in a small coop side by side of the large coop. Little one has been there for a month now and I let them out together in the hopes that things will go well. Not yet tho.
