Large beetle stuck in crop

My hen is dealing with sour crop. I've been vomiting her, feeding her yogurt, and other things I've read on the forum. A few of the times I've vomited her, small pieces of a beetle have come out - the head and a few legs. I vomited almost everything out tonight and then started massaging the crop. And I could feel the bug's thorax. Its a huge beetle thorax. I can't get her to regurgitate it and it won't pass through the crop. Massaging doesn't break it up. My girl has been dealing with this for over a week and has lost a ton of weight (and she's 8). She's not eating so I'm having to force-feed her, which means I can't get grit into her. What do I do?

I don't know how to do it, but crop surgery may be needed.

The bug won't break? If you could get her to swallow some small rocks it might help grind it up during massage.

Have you tried getting some vegetable oil in her? See if that will lubricate things and you might be able to massage it back out her mouth. If she ate it it will fit to come out.

Have you tried those non invasive options? I'd really try the lubricant.

Up until tonight when I felt the bug I've just been treating her for sour crop. I've been giving her the Crop Bound capsules from Twin City Poultry Supply with no success, Monistat, yogurt, electrolytes, mush, and more. Unless I can put it in her mouth with a syringe, its not going down her throat. I'm going to try more oil tomorrow. I'll put her down before I try crop surgery on my own. I love her too much to put her through that.

Any other suggestions? My lady is still standing and walking, but not for much longer.

Maybe someone else could chime in on the safety of this idea, but could you manipulate the bug thorax into a position where you can hold it in place and squash it? Or maybe a modified version of this tube-and-wire tool.

Do you have an avian vet nearby?
