Hello, my hen was sitting on 2 eggs for 20 days and just left them on Saturday. I put them under a heat lamp Saturday night and today (Monday) they are chirping and 1 egg is cracking. Should I put her back on them and lock her in the coop with them or just leave them under the lamp since she left them? I really want to make sure they live! Do they need their mother hen or can I hatch them myself? What do I do with them once they hatch?? Thanks so much for any advice!

Welcome to BYC.
A bit more information is needed here. You say the hen left the eggs - how long was she away from the nest? Has she returned to the nest site at all since you removed the eggs or has she gone back to ranging and roosting with her flock? If she is no longer broody (has not returned the nest, is now behaving normally vs. broody) then putting the eggs or chicks back will be a death sentence to the chicks (if they hatch successfully) because a non broody hen will have no maternal instinct to care for them and if she (or the others in the flock?) doesn't do outright harm to them they will die for lack of care.

She roosted with the rest of the chickens on Saturday night which is how I realized she was off her nest, I saw her on the roost! To my knowledge she has not gone back and she has been walking around with the rest of the chickens since Saturday we she got on roost with them. My fear was she would kill them if I made her go back however I do not know what to do with them once they hatch!?

I agree with Ol Grey Mare.

I'd also like to ask if you have the eggs enclosed in anything? The need a humid environment to finish hatching. Not closed completely, to where they can't get oxygen, but they need some moisture in the air. The pips can dry out and stick to the chick, trapping them inside the shell.

Thank you for adding that - had it in my head and forgot to transfer it to the screen, lol. A proper hatching environment is vital.

They are in a pen with windows and with a heat lamp just keeping them warm. But how do I get moisture in there? Can I spray them with a water bottle lightly?

You may get 2 responses from me on this however I am new to this page and was not sure if my last reponse posted or not since I can not see it. But my hen left her nest on Saturday evening I noticed she was up on the roost with the rest of her flock! To my knowledge she has not went back to the nest. She has been walking around with the rest of the chickens and roosting with them since Saturday evening. I put the heat lamp on them Saturday evening and they are chirping and the one egg is cracked as of this evening. I posted a picture so you could see it.

Sounds like she is not returning to the nest. Has any progress been made with the eggs?
