Having trouble figuring out the breed of one of my hens

This hen came with a run of black sex linked hens from a hatchery. She has always looked slightly different; built different as a pullet, more gold in her coloring, etc. Now that she is full grown, I am still having trouble figuring out what breed she is or if she is a mix. Any help would be appreciated! Btw, her name is Blanche Devereaux, off of the Golden Girls :)

If she came from a hatchery, she's most likely a black sex link, as advertised. She's not the classic look, but we've seen birds colored like her before from hatchery stock. Breed enough mixes and you're bound to come up with some that look different. Personally, I love her coloring

I agree; Black Sex Link pullet. BSLs are egg laying machines. You should get loads of eggs from that girl.)

Thanks so much! I love her coloring too, and she's so friendly! That makes total sense about the mixes and something different just coming out in her, that had crossed my mind. She just looks so much different than all my others that it had me wondering!

You're welcome.

Hi macylee,

Yes the others are correct that it is still a Black Sex Link. I do want to add that it is actually an extra special Black Sex Link known as the Black Beauty Sex Link. That name applies to ones that display more red than the usual all-black. I've had a few Black Beauties before. They lay excellent brown eggs! Yours is a beauty too!

Thank you Uber, now I learned something new "Black beauties, sex link." Hope I can remember that, long enough to pass it along.

Thank you for telling me! And her and the others have just started laying about a week or so ago, and we already have more eggs than we know what to do with!

Thank you, drumstick_diva,

Most people just call them "Black Beauties" while others call them "Black Beauty Sex Links." Either way the important thing to know is that they are sex-linked. So if you wanted to breed a Black Sex Link rooster with a Black Sex Link hen, the chicks would not breed true.

This is a common misunderstanding that it was so important that we decided to post the answer on our FAQs. Please visit our FAQs on our website at http://uberchicranch.com/faqs.html and see a more detailed answer to, "What is the difference between "Autosexing" and "Sex-linking?"
