My black orpington which is 18 months old is loosing a lot of feathers. Some bare spots. any thoughts as to why and what to do. is she going to die?

she has lost all her long feathers on her back side and has bare spots and now she has a bald spot on her upper chest and loose feathers that have not fallen off yet.

It's that magical time of year...MOLTING SEASON. Lots of feathers everywhere. No eggs to be found. Prickly, ornery birds all around.

Increase the protein content of their feed and wait it out. It stinks, but it happens.

She is going through a molt and will lose all of her feathers. Then she will get more feathers. Each time hens molt you might get less eggs from that hen and she will need lots of protein to regrow her feathers. This process can take anywhere from 8-16 weeks.

Nope. It's a fall thing. Light starts getting dim, and it's time to drop the plumage.
