I don't remove the leaves till they die and then just cut them across. at the top of the bulb, not too close. As the bulb dries out, the leaves will die back.

 

They are not cold hardy in northern climes. Even in zone 7 they would need to be well mulched to survive.

 

They have to have at least 2 months of rest after the foliage dies back and kept in a dark place.
