will this work in the winter?

The days start getting longer after the winter solstice, which will be on December 22. The solstice is the shortest day of the year. After that, the days will get a little longer each day, signaling to the hens that spring, and warm weather, is on the way. It's got nothing to do with daylight savings, which is a human invention. It's all about shorter days versus longer days.

these two are the survivors of my Easter eggers babies

Cute. Sorry to hear about all the predators getting your babies. I am in Mass as well, lots of animals that see chickens as snacks here, unfortunately.
