Hi all

I'm looking to get into breeding what are not so common in my area. The breeds I'm considering are dorkings, basque, faverolles, buckeyes. Faverolles have been on my list for some time. Basque I'm considering due to their attributes and friendliness.

I'm looking for quiet birds that don't mind confinement but are also good foragers. I live in New York so the breed also has to be able to tolerate cold winters.

Looking for any breed advice on the breeds I'm considering.

Maybe check out what breeds are not so common in your (relative) immediate area? Also, attending shows will give you an insight into what is out there, and how to go about breeding / selling from other breeding bods. Im no expert, but breeding for financial gain is not as easy as one may first think but thats not a reason to have a crack at it!

I have chosen these list of breeds due because I would believe I would enjoy breeding them. I would be looking to sell a few chicks, but mostly as breeding trios. But selling is definitely not a top priority.
 
Faverolles are an excellent breed; beautiful, good layers, and one of the friendliest, sweetest, and most gentle breeds in the chicken world. Other breeds that have a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle are Orpingtons, Australorps, Sussex, Silkies, Cochins, and Brahmas. Keep in mind of course that there can always be an exception with any breed. And while these breeds may be common in your area, you can always go with color varieties that are not common (for example something like Blue or Jubilee Orpingtons instead of Buff Orpingtons).

Thank you! I've decided to still get a good mix - mahogany faverolles, white Orpingtons, buff Cochins and basques. I won't get them for a few months but I think I'll have a good group
