First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Good to know. I'll keep throwing bits in! Also, I think it was you who recommended the heating pad cave as opposed to the heat lamp... THANK YOU! Much happier chicks, and MUCH happier mama! The chicks were afraid of the dark the first night and chirped for quite a while before settling down. Now, when the lights go out they chatter for a few minutes then are perfectly silent until the lights go on in the morning. Added bonus, I'm not worrying about my house catching fire all night.

We used a heat lamp for this first time. We hung it from a chain from a hook in the ceiling and didn't put it too close. No thermometer , I adjusted it by chicks' behavior. It felt very safe. BUT, I didn't like that the chicks were exposed to light 24/7 for the first weeks. They are 3 weeks now and we just turned it off, but it was very high the past few days. Next time I'd love to try the heating pad/cave so I'll have to find where it's discussed. :)

We'd love to have you join us!

Ainee--what beautiful chicks!  I haven't heard of some of those breeds.  #1 and 3 really caught my eye.

Hi Barnbum7,
I put my tiny little comment at the end of LaBellaVita's post - probably should've put it first - but they are her chicks. I thought they were very pretty too! Your chicks are very cute too! (Nice tribute to Helen. :))

Is anyone else having issues with their chicks not warming up to them? Mine seem to go back and forth and one will be more skiddish than the other one week. Then the next week the other one is the skiddish one. Lol

I'm still keeping them in our house because I'm too nervous to put them outside. Lol. They are right in our living room so they have been getting a lot of socialization:) They are part of the family now! Eventually they will go out when it's warmer and we can spend time with them outdoors.
I still have mine inside too. During the day they run a muck. I too am nervous about them going outside alone especially since we have so many dogs and cats that run loose. However once lights are out they snuggle down and go right to sleep. Even last night they slept through the hassle of birthing puppies.( uggh). . But once my girl and guys get bigger they will be out in the coop where this mom will hang with them most the days.

I do with al mine except deep fry and penguin who have no fear of me unless I am not in my chair. Seem they think mom's only ok in the chair cause they love to flip upon to my lap especially for treata. The rest are slowly understanding that. But one day I am a)owed to pet and touch em the next no go. I figure slow and steady will win and will know I won't harm em
