We have a blank sex link with really bad pasty butt. We've soaked her in warm water for about 3 hours now (cumulatively), tried wiping it, but it doesn't seem to be clearing. We're afraid she's going to die a painful death. Is there anything else we can do besides soaking it, and massaging gently with a tissue? Thanks for your help!

The vent looks to be protruding just a bit, so it may be stopped up. Can you see if there any hard/dried poo actually inside the vent? If there is, you might have to clear it. A pair of tweezers and some patience will do the trick. Just pick out everything at the opening and wait for more to make its way down.

If the chick is managing to actually expel waste, I'd just keep in clean and keep an eye on it.

Yes, there's definitely poo stopped up in there. It's not expelling, but there was some stringy white stuff coming out when we had her in the warm water. Trying the tweezers now. Thank you!!!

Ouch! That looks rough! One of my barred rock chicks had pasty butt a few weeks ago but not that bad. Maybe the tweezers will work! I would definitely switch to straw if little pieces of wood chips are coming out. I have used straw before and never had an issue. Some say it molds quickly and such but I changed it weekly and everything was just fine. Good luck and I hope the little chickie gets over its pasty butt!

We've been pulling out little chunks of wood. We're thinking it's probably from their bedding. Anyone had experience with this? Is it most likely fatal?

Me, again

Keep pulling it out and give your chicks a pan of dirt so they have a source of grit. One of my Silkie chicks did the same thing, she's still alive and kicking today :)
