My Rhode Island Red has had a large, firm crop for months now. When we first noticed the problem in the winter, we secluded her and gave her all of the recommended foods to remedy the problem. It didn't seem to work, but she never acted sick so we put her back with the flock.

Months later, her crop is still large and hard. She's still not laying, whereas the other hens have started back up from the winter, and she's still not acting sick. My husband is away for an extended period for military training and I cannot let this chicken get sick on my watch because there is no way on Earth I could cull her.

Any advice or recommendations or previous experience with a clogged up crop without the hen behaving sickly? I'm terrified she's eventually going to go down hill.

Welcome to BYC. So, her crop never gets smaller overnight before she eats in the morning? Have you tried flushing her crop with water and massaging several times day? Using probiotics, feeding only soft food such as yogurt and egg, not feeding whole grains, and giving 2 capsules of stool softener doccusate sodium sometimes help. I haven't treated crop problems in my flock but there are some good threads and links to look up by doing a search at the top of this page for impacted crop.

No, her crop never gets smaller. I read you're post and began making a point to massage it every day. When I did it today she sort of burped and gurgled. Im not sure what that indicates? You mentioned flushing it with water... how would I go about doing that? Also, are these stool softeners you mention over the counter or something I can get at the feed store? Im familiar with the probiotics and soft foods, so I'll start there (along with the massages). Thank you for the reply!
