I got 4 new chicks by total surprise even to myself. The tack store had buff orpingtons, barred rocks and cuckoo marans. All breeds I've wanted. I have them on a good medicated feed. I've been very careful to not handle them then go handle my hens. How do I need to be sure not to put my hens at risk? I love them. I would get rid of my new chicks before hurting my girls.

And just cause they are cute!

practice good bio security. wash your hands after handling and before going to your hens. keep them away from your hens until your sure they are healthy.were your hens vaccinated against Mareks disease? The chicks are so young it's doubtful they carry anything but it's good to keep them quarantined just in case. once you know they are healthy then introduce them. They are so cute! I'm getting some barred rocks as well April 11th. I'm getting 7 females. I can't wait!

thank you! As far as I know my hens were not vaccinated. When would that have happened? Hasn't since I've had them so unless it happened before they left the hatchery then I would safely assume they haven't. How long will we know for sure that they are healthy? So far thankfully everything is pretty normal with them.

Congrats on your new chicks. If they were vaccinated, they would have been before they left the hatchery. You have received good advice for keeping your older hens safe-at some point you will need to consider how you will integrate these new girls into your current flock-if you plan to do so.
Enjoy them! Sooooo cute.
