To close, or not to close?

We have an incredibly secure 8'x8' chicken house with an equally secure 8'x12' roofed, connected outdoor area. The chickens seem to prefer roosting for the night in the outdoor area, rather than in their house. There are adequate roosts in and outside the house. Is it important to close the door to the outdoor area and lock them inside, or are they smart enough to go inside if it's cold enough? We're in SoCal but have had a few rainy 48F nights and they chose to stay outside so I'm worried that maybe they need me to think for them on this one. :)

Provided you are secure in your assessment of the security, there is no reason to force them to roost inside. Chickens have a much better understanding of what conditions they are comfortable in than we do.
