Lost chicken, unknown cause

I found one of my best layers expired in the run this evening. All seemed well this morning when I let the flock out of the coop. There are no visible wounds, crop feels normal as does the belly. The only thing that seemed odd was her vent looked red and inflamed. Any input from anyone out there would be welcome. Worried about the rest of the flock.
