I have 3 Welsh harlequin ducklings 7-8 days old. They are very messy in their brooder (as expected!!). I just wondered if anyone had any tips as to what may keep it slightly dryer / cleaner in there. I'm cleaning them out twice a day and happy to do this - just wondered if there was a particular bedding or feeders etc anything to keep it slightly dryer / cleaner in between cleans. They have another couple of weeks before going out!

What some people do is cut out part of a plastic container so the ducklings can get it side ad put their food and water in that. Leave a lip so that anything that spills will stay in. This helps keep them from getting their water everywhere.

if you can get control of the water, you will be good to go.

There are lots of threads in the forum that show different options.
You can use a food storage container thing and cut a hole in the top to get their head in, but keep their body out.
You can put whatever you use for a waterer on top of of a cake pan with a rack over it which will keep the water contained.

I'm very much a novice but for water Im using a mini bread tin(disposable) and put rocks in in so they can't dump it nor can they really get wet. It's not a perfect solution but it's better than the red waterer I bought from TSC.

Thanks for the replies. Do you mean a baking tin? Any pics welcome. Will also look at the other threads as you suggest. Cheers!

Yes a baking tin. I used the diet mt dew pic as a size comparison

I put mine in a wire rabbit hutch instead of a normal brooder. I put pine shavings everywhere except around the water where I put straw. That way spilled water hits the ground. Problem solved lol.

I made this one using a lasagna tray with hardware cloth wrapped over it a scrap 2x4 in the middle and stapled the hardware cloth to it for stability. Keeps the bedding nice and dry.
