Make me smart! Please talk to me about weather radios. What do they do? Do they alert one to a weather emergency? Last night, a tornado touched down just a few miles away from us, and we slept straight through it. I don't want that to happen again. Thank you!!!
 
The National Weather Service has a certain frequency on which they constantly broadcast information about the weather in your area. A weather radio is tuned to that frequency; you can tune in any time to get the latest updates just by pushing a button. The radio has a very loud alarm that will go off if a severe weather warning is issued. We have a weather radio that is decades old; I have heard that they can now be very specific about exactly what part of the area within broadcast range gets alerted.
