I went to let my 7 week girls out this morning and noticed some fresh blood in the coop. I went to investigate and noticed that my White Orpington's vent was actively bleeding.

I separated her from the flock and put her in a tote. Since then I've given her a bath but still it is very red. I don't think it's actively bleeding anymore. She is lethargic ... I've got her in my office with me and giving her droppers of water with electrolytes in it but she doesn't want to eat or drink.

I'm going to be really honest here... I'm a brand new chicken mama. We've had them since they were a few days old. I'm terrified to push the vent back in (assuming that is what it is)... it's so red that I'm not even sure how to and I'm worried of hurting her more. There are no droppings in the tote (which she's been in from 7:30 this morning)... I feel like that can't be good. Is there any helping her out?

Thank you! I saw that too... I'm just not feeling comfortable shoving it back in without knowing for sure if that's the issue and it's still bloody even after the bath. I am going to try to bath her longer (I only had her in the bath for a few minutes, but I ready it should be longer) and see if I can see what's going on better afterwards. :(

So sorry to hear about your pullet!
I don't know much, but I have had a young hen prolapse (and survive!). The best and first thing you can do would be to bathe her and see if she really does have vent prolapse.
If it is prolapsed, you should wash it with soap and water as gently and as best as you can, then spray it with Vetericyn, a wound spray.
In addition, my vet also recommended that we apply Prep-H to the prolapse, to reduce inflammation.

After that, we did more, but it was much more complicated --so I'll just hang around to see what happens before posting again.

And hopefully someone else can help too! Good luck to you and your hen!

I bathed her again and looked more. About a 1.5 inch something is hanging from the vent. It's deep red/dark. It looks like the pictures I've seen of intestine.. but I have no idea how that could even happen. I tried to pull on it gently to see if it was just a really hard poop but it wasn't coming off (it felt like what I'd imagine organ feel like... squishy but firm... not like poop) and then she reached around and started to pull at it again and to be honest I freaked a little and wrapped her in a blanket so she wouldn't mess with it. She's wrapped in the blanket resting again in the tote in my office. She's also tried to pass poop a few times but it just comes out watery blood tinged clear stuff. ugh... this is hard stuff! :(

Is the vent actually protruding ? If not it is not a prolapse and could well be from one of your other chickens pecking at the vent area and causing the bleeding...whatever the cause she needs to be kept in isolation for the time being.

For a prolapsed vent....you can use Prep H or honey...slather some onto her clean vent...honey is actually anti bacterial and is wonderful and natural too!

OK you just posted while I was composing my message...believe me...that protrusion can go back inside her...a warm bath to relax her and gently push the prolapse back inside...hold for 5 minutes...no it is not easy and may take several attempts;...
