Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

What are everyone's New Year's traditions?

We always play a family game of Monopoly. This year, we got Cards Against Humanity (family edition) so the kids want to play that too. We always make a platter with summer sausage cooked in sweet and sour sauce, cheese cubes, and crackers. We just randomly munch all evening while playing our games. DH drinks his Jack and coke, I have my wine (and some captain and coke) and and the kids have soda and sparkling grape juice. By midnight we're all about dead but we bang on pots and pans at midnight then crawl off to bed.
Our little church and sometimes a friend or two pop by w a plate of something to share and play games anywhere from about 7 to midnight. We "pray in" the new year and then say things like, "Well, we made it through another year without killing each other, so I guess that makes it a pretty good year!"

I have no idea what marzipan is or why it comes in a can.

I know See’s has a chocolate candy called marzipan, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried it.
It is a European thing. Smashed almonds with sugar added. The homemade version is obviously way better than canned... but canned is fast. ;)

Marzipan is pretty big in Germany, my dad loved Marzipan. The really cool thing about it is that it has the consistency of playdoh. So you can color it whatever, and then mold it into whatever.

So in spring bakeries would sell marzipan in flower shapes.. or put the flower shapes on a cake. In fall marzipan comes in fruit shapes for harvest time.

In Germany marzipan good luck pigs are a huge thing for new years.

As a kid new years was only a big thing at my mom's parents.

There it was black eyed peas, corned beef and cabbage, banging pots at the "pretend midnight", so maybe 8pm... then bed.

Spouse wasn't/isn't big into new years..

There is a church service for New Years.

And when the kids were smaller we would usually stay up to watch fireworks with the kids (that are put on by the city, usually a huge great display, and usually at a nice friendly to kids hour) then bang on pots and go to bed.

Now though.... except for church... eh... whatever...

I got that catalogue AND a seed catalogue on the same day... They're plotting their evil schemes!
Was it this one?
