Hi everyone,

I'm a little concerned that my local Peavy Mart (Canada) sold me hatchery chickens instead of the heritage chickens bred by the University of Alberta heritage breeds program.

I got suspicious once I saw a picture on here of a heritage RIR and it looked so much darker.

Here is a picture of one of them. They are saying that it is 3 days old, which because of the wing feather development I don't believe. That being said these are my first RIR so I don't know if they feather out faster.

If anyone can offer their opinion or has pictures of their heritage RIR to share, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!!

I would say a farm store. The university of Alberta has a heritage chicken program and they partnered with peavy mart. Here is a link to the program https://heritagechickens.ca/
How can you tell that it is hatchery quality?

I was just saying if it was from a feedstore/farmstre they almost never have purebred birds or anything Heritage, and they usually sell mislabeled Easter Eggers, but if they are partnering with a heritage program then you probably have a heritage bird :3

Oh okay, thank you I thought that there was something about the chick that you could tell. I did speak to one of the head guys there and he assured me that they only had heritage breeds at the store at that time. I just got a little paranoid since I have read so many stories on here of people purchasing chicks that are mislabeled and that other chick I saw looked so red in comparison. Thanks for your response!
