We can be infected by some parasites that also infect dogs and cats, and some of those eggs are pretty tough to kill. UGH! Also, because it's less expensive to make all-plant based chicken feed that's what commercial birds are fed. As long as the amino acids are balanced correctly, it's fine. Animal based proteins are fine for chickens, who are omnivores, and our backyard birds are busy proving that daily. Like the little velociraptors they want to be! Mary

Considering that the ingredients in most feeds is plant derived, I would think it would be safe to say most feeds are "vegetarian", whether labeled as such or not.

But, if it's not advertised as vegetarian the formula could change from bag to bag and at some point include animal proteins... If you watch the feed labels of most feeds you will see the formulas change every so often to adjust for regional, seasonal or price availability...

Almost all feeds available commercially are vegetarian with added synthetic lysine and methionine to make up for what is missing in vegetative sources.
