First what you desire needs to be dialed in. Just telling them you want... this, that, or maybe the other thing, tells them you just want SOMETHING, and it pretty much says it doesn't matter what.

That doesn't show a parent a thing about being focused or really knowing what you want.
That type of message is going to leave them feeling that you might not be responsible enough yet to care for a pet.

Focus on what you want. Study the animal, learn all you can about it, then honestly look at whether or not you'll have the time or patience to follow through on its needs.

Who's going to clean the cage, litter box, whathaveyou. Your parents don't want to get stuck with the responsibility when you tire of the pet or its needs.

Who's gonna pay for the pet? If it gets ill, who's going to pay for that? Who's going to pay for the food?

And most of all, and you're not going to like this... It's your parents house, and you have to relent to their wishes.

What Joe said...

Show your parents you are responsible and able to afford the pet, it will go a long way...

Failure to clean up after yourself or having to be reminded to do your chores shows a lack of responsibly... On the other hand cleaning the house every night before bed and doing your chores first thing in the morning (every morning) and doing 'extra' chores you were never even asked to do goes a long way in showing responsibility... Also remember us 'older' folks are not easily fooled, a week or two of 'sucking' up and doing your chores doesn't show a long term commitment, on the other hand 6+ months of never having to be asked does show responsibility...

Ok,but you, know, you sounded a little mean.aare you trying to be mean to me?

To be blunt, it only sounds 'mean' because you don't like to hear that you might have to work and earn what you desire, instead of just asking for it...

And to be even more blunt, there will come a time when you have your own children and you look back and say "WOW, I fully understand now..."

What BBQJOE and MeepBeep said …. Plus

As an adult, parent and animal lover, there are many pets that I would like to have also. However, I know that I do not have the resources or finances to keep them and it would not be fair on the animal.

May be your Mom is saying “No” because she knows that the resources and/or finances are currently at their limit.

Do your family currently have any pets? As with all pets, the more you have, the less time you have to give each one the individual love and attention it needs. May be she is saying “No” because if you do tire of the pet, it is something else she will have to care for?

You are probably thinking “no way I will tire of it” but some of the pets you mention you want can live for many, many years and things will change for you over those years and your attention may be distracted elsewhere.

Has your Mom given you reasons you can not have the pets you want? If she has not, try asking her for the reasons. You may then understand why she said “No” or be able work with her to address her concerns/reasons.

Cluckster, I need to ask you some questions.
I am forced to assume that since you're hanging out at a chicken site, that there must be some chickens at home.

Whose chickens are they?
How many are there?

Lastly, what is your role in caring for these animals if any?
