For those with recent experience hatching Black shouldered. I haven't hatched BS for a couple years now, and I can't remember if they normally have this or not. I hatched a chick that looked yellow with a very obvious gray/silver color running from the back of it's head down its back in a stripe. Also some color on wings. Today after fluffing it is obvious the wings are that pinkish color we see with BS chicks. But I can't figure out if the gray color on the back is normal or not? I remember having a tough time telling newly hatched whites from newly hatched BS, and this guy's stripe of gray was glaringly obvious. Do you guys usually see some color on the backs of your BS chicks? I'll get pics if needed. Thanks, DM

You may have a Black Shoulder Silver Pied. I hatched one out last year.

Here are the parents. Dad is an extra male I brought home from George Conner's place. He is supposed to be IB split Violette and possibly spalding as well. Looking at him I had a feeling he was also split BS, but George didn't say that. I paired him up with my Purple BS hen who I know carries a white or pied gene from her father. This male has no white feathers that I have seen, but he must be carrying something as the first chick from them is a loud pied, then 2 solid dark IB chicks and now this BS. So I know I was right about his BS split, I am just wondering about that gray streak. Doesn't look likely that they would produce SP does it?

I would have never bet on him carrying any kind of white, but obviously, he is a true Dark Pied. I will try to find a pic of Salt-n-Pepper this evening if I can figure out which one it is. I may need to go to Suzy's database to find it. I was surprised too when my Rocky, IBBSWE over IBWE hens
threw that baby.

Can we see a picture? He could be pied BS.

All the silver BS chicks i hatched didn't had that tan color on their wings.

Here are 2 quick pics, but it doesn't show up very well. When a silver pied hatches and is still wet, it is easy to see the colored areas on them, but once they fluff out it can be harder to see it. That is how this guy is, and it may be that he/she is just a plain old BS and I just never noticed the darker patches at hatch. I just want to be very careful since dad is supposed to be split Violette.

When BS silver chicks hatch they will look different than regular silver chicks, they will not have that color on the back of their necks, this one doesn't looks sp, he has a lot of color on his wings.

Are you sure there is grey color on his neck? I can't see it clearly.

I put a couple drops of water on him to make it show up. Very hard to see, but when he first popped out of the egg I wrote down Silver Pied because the gray was that obvious.
