Hi everyone!
I recently ordered 9 chicks from My Pet Chicken and paid extra to have them sexed. They arrived Wednesday morning all lively and alert. One spent more time under the EcoGlow Brooder than the others but I just figured she was recovering from the trip in the mail. Yesterday I heard her crying while pooping so I checked her over and was surprised to see that her vent was prolapsed! I've treated this in one of my laying hens, successfully, but never for a chick. I've been cleaning her and pushing it back in with a Q tip and applying preparation H and triple antibiotic ointment, like I would for a laying hen, but it keeps coming back out when she poops. She even cries a little while pooping :( Other than that, she's a sweet and chatty speckled sussex chick. I'm hoping that, as she grows older, her muscles will become stronger and she will be able to hold it in. She's eating and drinking normally but spends more time under the heat than the others. I can't help but wonder if this was caused from being sexed too roughly. I emailed My Pet Chicken to see if they had any additional suggestions on what I can do for her but I thought I would ask you all and see if you had any more ideas of what I can do to help her. I haven't seen much about sexed chicks with a prolapse anywhere else on the internet and I don't want to put her down unless absolutely necessary (for example, if she stops eating and drinking normally and/or becomes less alert) Thanks! :)
