I have 10 pearl guineas 3 of which have 1 white feather on each wing. It seems I have read something about the pearls with the white wing feathers on this site but if I did I could not find it again. Is there any significance to these white feathers. Thx

Are you saying the one white feather gene is not linked to the pied gene?

To the best of my knowledge, the single white wing feather has not been shown to be linked to the white gene that causes pied guineas. The white gene that causes the pied color is in a different location than the other color genes. If their are two white genes, the guinea will be white. Because this gene is in a different location than the other color genes are a white guinea can be carrying and hiding any of the other color genes that there are.

If the guinea only has one white gene, it will be a pied guinea.

Obviously there are other genes that have not been researched well enough in guineas to know what all is happening. It is my understanding that they have developed a white guinea in Australia that reacts differently than the white gene in the USA.

I have not seen where anyone has tried to explain what is going on in Pinto guineas which is an entirely different white pattern than that caused by the pied pattern although the white gene causing the pied pattern is probably involved along with some kind of a modifier.

Im just going on what guinea colours are in Australia so my knowledge of how other colours etc work is beyond me. I have had pearl guineas breed with white winged pearl birds that produce pieds but that may just be the Australian genes? My birds all started with just white on the feathers and now have white all over their chests, wings etc.

There is apparently one or two people with white guineas in Australia but I have not seen them nor seen legitimate photos of them. So I wouldnt know of any differnt working of white genes compared to US ones. I do know that the Australian guineas do not carry the white gene so you can breed heavy pintos all you want but will never get a white. We do have the red eye gene which I think no where else in the world has?

From what I have read, the white guineas in Australia do not react the same genetically there as the white guineas we have here. Breeding a white guinea here to a white guinea will only produce white guineas. Breeding a white guinea with a colored guinea will only produce pied guineas. Breeding a pied guinea to a pied guinea will produce 25% white guineas, 50% pied guineas and 25% colored guineas.

I have seen no evidence that breeding a Pearl Gray guinea that has one white wing feather with another such bird will produce pied guineas here. I am not doubting you that such does occur in Australia. I just have not seen any evidence of it happening here.

I believe that there is a person on the Guinea Fowl Forum that is located in the northeast U.S. that has some red eyed Cinnamons. How she got them is information that I do not have.

edit to correct Guinea Fowl Forum link.

Makes sense, but with no indefinite proof of white guineas in Australia I'm not sure whom your info is from? If there is white guineas in Oz then there wouldnt be common knowledge of their genes because they would be so rare.

Could you link the forum that the person in the US is in? Thanks

The post was in this forum. A quick search did not locate the post that I was thinking about but it did show up this post.
