I'm new to Pekin ducks and have a mating question...
Our ducks started mating @ approximately 14 wks.; is this normal?
We have 2 drakes & 2 hens.
Any help is appreciated

Sounds about right.

Please watch closely. Drakes can be too rough, can gang up on a duck, and you are the ducks' only hope - it is our job to make sure every member of the flock is safe.

Thankyou for your reply! I have been a nervous wreck.
So, I have read that once they start mating it's usually a few weeks before the females may lay an egg; has this been your experience?
There seems to be so much conflicting information on the Internet.
Also, should I provide them with some sort of nesting box or area for the females? If so, what should it consist of?
The health & happiness is top priority for our birds, so any information is appreciated greatly...
Thanks!

Most ducks like a quiet place to lay with nice soft bedding you can lay a piece of scrap flat wood up against the wall and screw it in place to keep it from falling then she can go under and have a nest,
or make nest boxes out of scrap wood. all up to you, my Scovy's just lay in the stalls in the deep bedding that's there.

You should see eggs soon.

Hi Patti!

How are your ducks doing now? I have 17 week old Pekins - 2 drakes and 2 hens and am nervous that I have too many males. did you have any problems with this ratio?

Thank you!
Casey

They haven’t started mating yet, as far as I can tell. They’re all very close with one another, there’s no pecking or bullying so far. They are in a pen in the evening and free to visit the pond or lawn during the day. I’ve only seen the male tail curl develop this week and two have it so I’m worried for my two girls. Thank you for responding!

Maybe consider adding more females a good ratio should be at least 3 females to 1 drake more if you can and having a pond might keep the drakes from sparing once those hormones really get going.

Thank you, there are some people selling ducks nearby, if the ladies start to act outnumbered i will get some more.
all I need now is for the ducks to want to swim. I seem to have a small flock of ducks that do not want to be in the water. Lol.
