Been following for awhile and just finally joined. I'm looking to get into chickens, specifically barred rocks but they're impossible to find. I was able to get 9 shipped to me and got them yesterday. 3 have detached air sacs. I let them rest big end up for 24 hours but no improvement. I have no experience incubating and have a very old hovabator type incubator. I left the eggs in the carton pointing up and have the temp at 101 and humidity with no water inside the incubator is sitting between 45 and 50. Does this sound ok? Should I be laying them just on the wire on their sides or is the carton ok? I've read to not turn them for the first 4-7 days. That sounds odd but if it helps I'm up for anything. Really hoping a couple hatch so I can have my barred rocks. Otherwise I'll have to find some other breed and just buy chicks.

First off temps and humidity sound ok. I would keep an eye on the air cells for growth so that you can adjust down if needed. Yes, upright is best for shipped with loose or detached air cells. I would not turn for the first 2-3 days, but once there is development I would at least start tilting the eggs. @RubyNala97 has great experience with getting good rates on shipped eggs so she'd be a good one for tricks and tips with them. Many times detached won't firm back up and they have lower a hatch rate.
 
I notice too that my incubator gets too warm. I keep turning but can't go any further. I've been checking it lots but I'm worried this will hurt my eggs.

If you have water in the bator for humidity, as the water dries up your temp will go up, so if you're not running dry for a low humidity incubation I would check that first at the sign of rising temps. Adding water will normally bring it back down. How warm does it get?
 
Good news! Today is day 7 and I just candled my eggs! Out of 9, only 2 are infertile - the other 7 are looking great, loose air sacs and all! Time to start tipping them back and forth! Grow little chicks!!!!!! I also got impatient and ended up finding 2 barred rock hens and a silkie hen (my daughter wanted one) so I actually have my first 3 chickens out in the coop! Really hope these eggs make it!
