How to tame Coturnix Quail?

so I wrote a ton but the truth is do you want a friendly quail or a quail who is imprinted and thinks it's human.that is my case. I found her stuck going in circles in a tire on our ranch I brought her in no one was around must have been her first day out of shell. She cried all night in box with light food and water. She was so weak by morning she couldn't stand so I filled her crop with a syringe. I have rescued and released birds before. I replaced her in box and two hrs later she was standing I sat by her box a long time talking to her and pecking her food with my finger till she did same I tapped my finger in water over and over till she did same.then day two took her out of box and sat in living room put her down and told dog no. We did our thing she did hers then I noticed she followed wherever I went. SO I tried to take her out and introduce her to other young quail around ranch at 2 weeks she didn't even look at them or care. She doesn't like other birds she doesn't like or trust other dogs only her brother. So I tried to breed her I did. ENTICED a wild male into mating with her outside right by my feet. HE had been calling to her for weeks. she wasn't to keen on idea but allowed it to happen for forty five minutes. NEEDLESS to say she is 3 yrs old and never laid a single egg. I even let her invite the guy in house for two weeks. INTERESTING enough because he wanted to be with her but was a little scared of us and dog. THERE were a few flappy flying moments of hilarity when he was surprised. Finally she could take sharing her space no more and began pecking him. I let him out for all our sanity. No eggs. She is 5 now and does quite well on her own. However I imagine our story is one in a million. SO good luck and best of happy quail raising they are amazing little birds. my husband can't even shoot one anymore now that he knows how smart and how truly emotional and sensitive individuals they are. she plays nurse when my dog hurt his arm yelled at him every time he got up and followed him with his collar scolding him poor guy tripped over her a few times couldn't see her with collar. If she wasn't looking at his face to make sure he was ok. She was sitting next to him and every few minutes would peck him to make sure he moved. POOR dog he never got a moments rest. LolI have a completely tame California quail who lives in the house with my 95 pound dog no cage goes for car rides sits on my shoulder is very opinionated and gives her two cents all the time. her favorite things are gardening outside with mommy and watching TV. Her name is Goldy and her favorite movie is spirit she pecks the screen to show you what will happen next and looks away at the scary parts she loves vanilla ice cream but gets a brain freeze and she loves anything mommy has. Best are balloons they are fun to run with and napkins are fun to throw in the air and hide under. I may have a few ideas for you. SHE WAS a rescue who turned into a family member. SHE is not a quail she is Goldy has a mom a dad and her big brother Hershey the dog who she bosses around.

[/IMG][/IMG] hopefully you can see all three images. I am new to posting and I keep looking for people who have quail like goldy but I find everyone keeps them in cages and doesn't let them roam outside without restraints. So sadly I'm kinda alone I have chickens in a chicken coop. GOLDY hates them they are filthy load birds to her I guess. I do have advice to how I did it on accident. BE prepared to have a full time companion. There poops are not messy so easily contained she has a spot at the tv on her own bean bagchair. SHE has her own room with a table and fake grass under window with stairs thar have a ledge spanning between two bookshelves. It is also my office she has a big wood box below table filled with dirt for bathing and flinging and her own cascading little waterfall to drink from. But no bars no cage she comes out to living room if I call her she follows around if she has something on her mind. SHE stays in her room if she is mad at us. SHE hates it when I leave if she sees me put on shoes and I don't have her bag out she chases my feet pecking ferociously at my shoes. SHE gets tuck ins every night and is afraid of dark so has night light. SHE is scared of mice and screams for mom or dad if she sees one and wants it caught and removed immediatly. You can hardly set out a trap without her running all over u. She understands what I say for most part. I would say she is as smart as a dog and way funnier and awesome in some ways. SHE doesn't like to be pet but loves to cuddle her version of cuddling is sitting right next to you or on top of you. SHE chases her tail like a dog and dies her morning evasive manuvers in front of her mirror. Quite a different pet. My advice is hatch just one with only you as mom let it follow u everywhere even outside and make sure to take precautions in public places they get scared easily so get a carry soft bag while traversing across streets lest you have a scared quail on top a building who won't come down till everyone has gone and it's been quiet for an hour. EITHER that or you'll have to call the fire department to let you go up and get em. Thank god that hasn't happened but that's how it would go.

Oh, thank you! What a cute story! I should only raise one?? I have seven in the incubator now... Usually they get lonely if they don't have each other.. When I seperate the adults they usually try to get to the others when they are alone.. But what if the egg isn't fertile? I fell now it's a little too late for me to take out some eggs because I think there are embryos in some. And I feel bad if I eat life. I try not to get too attached to them because I'm going to eat probably all but 4 or something like that. But I'm already attached, it'll be difficult to eat them even though they're not TAME because the way they are is just so cute. Plus it's so difficult to take care of 38. Even though they're small they can make one heck of a mess, and during winter I don't want to be in the cold garage changing one humongous dirty bedding of quail manure. Also people say they can stand cold , but what's the temperature up to where they'll get too cold and die? Because winters coming and it gets pretty cold where I live because I'm on a mountain, so yeah. Thank you , though! And your mountain quail is very cute!

Adorable stories!

All the quail definitely get pepped up when I exclaim "Popcorn!!" And give them some sudden spirit fingers, LOL and it'll usually turn into a dance party if there are any frisky ones. Can't say I have choreographed quail.... They tend to crouch down and pop up and hit each other so I can't think of that as being planned by them, LOL!!

The lone quail sounds so sweet with such a big personality hehe!

@Coturnix Quail, having only one quail dependent on you would mean a massive responsibility of keeping it company and giving it freedom to keep it satisfied. Not sure if school or work would be fair to it being alone all day.. Something to think about. This is the reason I don't get a parrot - it's similar to taking on a child because it craves and needs so much company and entertainment to be happy and I wouldn't be able to fulfill it.

I might suggest you keep hatching and selling your quail and pick out and keep the friendly ones, that's how I got my group of four pet ones, small hatches of about 20 quail and I found some special ones in my last hatch of assorted colors. I don't think it had much to do with the colors but with my experience in quail chick "loving"

Honestly compared to hamsters and etc. and other birds, in my opinion tame quail make really lovely pets, I swear I'm addicted to feeling their soft feathers hehe oh and they like little leg tickles too ;)

*edit*

As for cold, I am feeling confident my garage hutch setup with wood shavings in Canada will be good since I saw pictures of an apartment balcony shelter for Coturnix quail in Montreal in -40 degree Celsius weather and they took it just fine :)

Wind proof with dry deep bedding seems to be key and I'm assuming cracked corn would help them generate heat like it does chickens?

Breed for personality if you are thinking of hatching more from those you keep. Keep the calmest male and keep your friendliest birds. I got my birds off a good breeder and her birds are so calm. She did a swap with someone for some new bloodlines and we bought a few. Those birds, despite us getting them as chicks and them getting handled as much as some we hatched from our group, these other birds are WILD. We only kept one male in the end simply because he's our daughters favourite. He is one uptight, crazy, anxious quail. So choosing breeding stock carefully is very important. And over time you should develop some very calm, sweet pets.

Thanks guys! I have only one problem for time . I have school from 7:45 to 2:30.... Bein alone all that time isn't fun, I know. I do have parakeets and finches and I end up having at least 20-10 minutes a day for them weather it's just some hand feeding or some training lessons. So I should hatch a group??? Thanks!!

Yes, hatch a group and keep the friendliest, and hatch more than you want to keep so you aren't stuck with a bunch of boys and only one or two girls! Two girls will live quite happily together if you only want a couple and even two boys with enough space and no females around to compete for. If you have a really sweet rooster you can get away with a trio but most of the time a boy needs at least four girls. Handle them a lot especially in that first week when the chicks are very cuddly, so maybe plan your hatch to happen in the holidays if you can. By the second week they are pretty busy and independent and curious about everything.

Ok thanks! I'm trying to aim that when they hatch I'll skip school that day to make sure everyrhings alright. Thanks again!
