Swollen, itchy around the eye area on one side, favus?

I have a young roo who I just notice was lethargic and with closer exam found its eye area swollen and that he was bothered by it, possibly itchy him. I also have been treating an older hen for what I am pretty sure is Favus on her neck. I noticed she was scratching her neck and found the crusty skin. I am treating both with miconazole cream.
What Im wondering is does Favus start out as a swelling and progress to the crusty skin? Are these two members of my flock suffering from Favus? Is Favus contagious?

Can you post some photos of the rooster and then hen?

How old is the rooster?
Does he have any other symptoms like coughing, sneezing, runny nose, etc.?
Any discharge from the swollen eye?

You may want to separate them both from the flock and separate from each other.

It's possible the Favus could be in the eye, but usually affects the comb and wattles first. Since he is lethargic with a swollen eye it could be something like a respiratory illness. Flush the eye with some saline and see if he possible has any debris in it. If the eye looks infected, apply some Vetericyn eye gel or Terramycin eye ointment to the eye.

Try to keep him hydrated offering some vitamins in his water and encourage him to eat.

Favus could be considered contagious, but if I understand correctly it is spread fairly slowly.

This is NOT my pic but I found it during an Internet search; it looks a lot like what is going on with my guy. You can see how the skin around the eye is all puffed out.
Ill try to get my own pics today.



My guy does not seem to have any discharge from eye or nose but he is lethargic and seem to prefer to hide in the yard and sleep or even not leave the roost for the day. I figure he feels awful.

My older hen with the scabby neck area skin acts quite normal except for the occasional neck scratching which brought her problem to my attention.

If your rooster looks similar to the bird in the photo he most likely has an infection in the sinus/eye. This is usually caused by respiratory illness, but occasionally dirt/dust/debris in the eye or a peck/insect bite may cause facial swelling. Looks for any small wounds or bites and check the eye closely to see if there is anything in it.

If you see any pus or debris gently flush and remove any matter with a wet qtip. The ointments mentioned in my previous post can be applied to the eye to help with any infection.

His lethargy is concerning, if he does not improve you may need to consider antibiotics or vet care.
 
I can give antibiotics and stop the cream treatment. He seems to calm when I put the cream on his skin. I thought the cooling relief if it is itching is what he enjoyed about the cream. May it is just the attention I am giving him

The cream may be soothing to him, they do seem to like attention too

I don't think it will hurt to continue to apply the cream since it's topical. What antibiotics do you have?

Little roo with swollen eye area


I got some pictures of my two ailing babies today. I think the cream is helping the hen but not the young roo. You must be right it is a sinus infection. He is laying in the sun and the hen is acting quite normal.
 
Hopefully the cream with continue to work on the hen. Also if you haven't done so check her over well for any signs of lice/mites.

You young fella looks to have a respiratory/sinus infection. Does he have any lesions or cheesy-like substance in his beak/throat?
If you have a vet that can see him, that would be best. He most likely needs antibiotic treatment. Tylan or Oxytetracycline may help.
