Who will lay first? Hens coming out of molt or pullets at point of lay?

It was the Australorp hen! I had checked often yesterday, no eggs, no one on nest. This morning, I went to let them out and there was the Australorp, Sheila, sitting on that nest! I went out later with warm oatmeal, as it's 8º here this morning and I heard Sheila hop down from the nest. I opened the door to find there was a warm, still wet egg. I'm so pleased with my little Sheila for resuming laying in winter. I'll keep checking to see if/when we might have more than one laying.

YAY!!! Today, a month later, on this cold snowy morning, the barred rock pullet (now 8 mo) has laid her first egg! The australorp hen took the less preferred nest. The australorp has averaged 4 - 5 eggs a week, which was her normal output last summer.

Well, I don't know if anyone is still following this story, but just in case, the SS pullet laid her first egg today! Hers is the little one. Interestingly, the BR pullet's eggs have all been fairly large, even her first. The BA hen's eggs are biggest, and often have 2 pointy ends. Now we only await the RIR hen to start laying again....
