Hello! I'm within a month of receiving my first gray saddleback pomeranian geese, and I was wondering if there was anything I should know about the breed. I will be receiving a gander and a goose, and I'm hoping for goslings in a year or two!

Hi, and welcome to BYC!!

I've never kept geese before, but there are several experience geese keeps here you could talk to, as well as threads and a whole forum on geese that I highly recommend you check out

Best of luck to you!

Hardest thing to breed for in Pom's is the bill & leg color. It should be pink, cull/don't use any with orange. As long as they aren't crosses you shouldn't have any trouble with the saddleback pattern. They are also good fliers if they have a runway to get a run at it. May want to clip a wing if your getting adults.

Thank you for your information! I was planning to clip, but I was also considering leg bands for labeling for safety measures. I have also heard that proper markings may be difficult to achieve.

The head coloring is harder than the back. You'll get some white in front of the eyes and under the bill that should be culled for. Also you don't want the gray going down the neck to far as well. You'll get some going down to far if you don't cull for it. Especially down the back of the neck.

Leg banding is a very good idea to keep track of individuals. I personally band every bird on my place. I band one leg with a colored zip tie that indicates what year they were born in and a red or blue tie indicating sex. And the other leg with a numbered leg band and a combination of colored zip ties that indicate where that bird came from ,as in what other breeder. Right it all down too, you'll think you can remember but after a couple years you'll forget. Or at least I do.

Good luck, glad to help. Also I'd recommend not giving them to much corn. It can tint the feathers of white geese a little orangey/yellow. Not really relevant if your not going to show them, just thought I'd mention it.
