So i originally bout 4 chicks from a local feed store and they said that they are sexed to about %80 to be hens. Well i already had to send one to a farm because it was a for sure rooster. Now i think i might have another but i cant tell for certain. looking at full grown maran hens i can see how this one might be a little bigger then the other two but i'm not sure! i attached a few pics to get everyones opinion..

Yep, he looks to be a cockerel :(

Also, just to let you know, it's marans with the 's' no matter if you're talking about one bird or twenty. They are named after Marans, France where they originated.

X2...looks like a cockerel to me, too. Nice-looking Cuckoo Marans.

What a let down! %50 of my chickens turn out to be roosters! is that just my luck or does that happen? here is a pic of the first one, that was a no brainer, he was a little aggressive.. this one isn't though..

Sounds like you were sold straight run birds and not sexed birds. Or it could be you just had really bad luck and managed to get two cockerels out of the batch, since vent sexing is usually only guaranteed with 90% accuracy so some cockerels do get mistaken for hens. 50% though sounds like they might have been straight run and not sexed unless you just had really bad luck.

I know that vent sexing is sometimes inaccurate...if it makes you feel any better, I once hatched a group of duck eggs and 4 out of 5 turned out to be drakes.

so the farm the last one went to had a marans that was full grown, they really don't know the age because its more or a farm animal rescue thing, but they say she's a good layer. Whats the rules on if i take rooster #2 over there and adopt her? will she fit in with her two younger sisters? they are about 2ish months old

Hi,
I'd say so. They are all about the same age. They will work out the pecking order among themselves. For my money I would sell this little cockerel on Craigslist. Marans are in big demand. Ask 20.00 for a started cuckoo Marans cockerel. That will buy you a bag of feed. or just ask to trade him for a bag of the feed you usually feed. easy done, everyone wins. You spent money raising this boy, Don't just give him away. Do you have any idea how dark the egg was he came from or the darkness of the eggs of the flock he came from? That is a good selling point. Or the name of the strain he came from? That's a good selling point too.
Best,
Karen
( ony stupid people like me give away quality birds to other people)

I realize you bought sexed pullets so 50% cockerels is pretty bad-- but to make you feel maybe a little better, my last broody hatched 8 chicks -- and *6* of them were cockerels. =) Six. UGH
