One of my chickens was fed some onion. According to some websites it is poisonous while others say that chickens can eat it in moderation occasionally. My chicken was fed around as much as two fifty cent coins. It has been around 45 minutes and there are no symptoms yet. She is very healthy and lays often. Do you think she'll be ok? Has anyone else had experience with chickens eating onion?

Mine always follow me around the garden and some of them love onion--they'll peck at them and get them out of the ground. Hasn't seemed to hurt them any.

Thankyou so much!! I forgot to mention that it was cooked onion, hopefully she'll be ok :)

Your welcome! I hear the same with nightshade family plants.(except for the egg part) Some say you HAVE to cook a tomato before you feed it to a chicken. I feed mine tomatoes as a treat once in a while, it never bothers them, as long as it isn't green or orange. This may be the same with garlic as well.

Happy chicken keeping!

She's fine. All those lists about toxic foods for chickens are just lists and have no practical application in real chicken life. Chickens won't die from a few mouthfuls of onion, so no worries.
