Need some real help, chick not eating much at all!

Hi everyone, newbie here. Long story short I got a bitty (3-4days old), was found by my grandmother a couple days ago. A hen had 3 bitties including this one, been cold weather, pretty sure chick is dehydrated/malnourished/etc. my grandmother had to get it up b/c hen and others left it behind and it couldn't really run at all. I've had it in a small cardboard box with a heating pad on low power with paper towels in between to keep from overheating. Pretty sure temp is fine there. Chick done good 2 nites ago and would drink water out of mini-cup/peck boiled egg yoke mixed with that electrolyte packet mix for farm animals/poultry. Last nite the bitty wouldn't eat hardly a mouthful, had to use eye dropper to give it water/electro mix. And tried to be careful not to make the chick aspirate/get fluid in lungs. Chick would just cherp real loud for the hen (me...) and would run into my hand and hide/crawl up my shirt sleeve. Only thing that calms it down. Today, chick about the same...pecked at some ground up bird seed I put in box a few times and drank some water solution, but ultimately the same...calling out loud for the hen and wanting to hide(stays up under teddy bear in its box). I took it outside and set it on ground, it'd peck at everything for a minute....then start the crying thing. I've tried to encourage it/hold my hands around it for comfort but it just runs up in my hand and cries. So what can I do here? It's just not really taking the initiative to feed itself much at all. It's poop was all clear yellow (diarrhea) 2 days ago but now black/brown/clear/yellow mixed which I'm sure is much better. No pasty butt, took care of that first day. It seems quite active at times but tires very easy, eyes half-closed until stimulated by touch/voice/etc. Btw of all things, my grandmother's dog killed the hen and other two chicks today....unbelievable but yeah. So I can't just put it back with hen when it's a little stronger. Any info/help really appreciated, thanks!

Your chick may be uncomfortable in your set up, which is not ideal. For best results, warmth should come from above the chick, not from underneath, and the temperature should be carefully monitored; it needs to be 95 degrees for the first week, but only from above or the side, with space for the chick to move closer and farther away from the heat source, especially with only one chick. If the heat comes from underneath, the chick cannot get away from it without losing it altogether. Your chick may be too cold to eat!

Give it chick starter. Boiled egg yolk is good, but your chick needs chick starter. If you are giving it seeds, it also needs some chick grit, or you'll have more health problems very soon, and you shouldn't give it those seeds. Until you get some chick starter, stick to the egg yolk. If your chick is showing this much distress, I urge you to act quickly to adjust your care. Mix your chick starter with slightly warm - not hot - water, and if your chick is cold it will help baby warm up quickly, just like us drinking warm drinks.

Wow....feed it Chick starter and only that for a couple of weeks and keep it warm or it will die.....90 is a good starting point with an area to get out of the heat.......water only and no seeds or treats......its a baby with a new system.......

Thanks for the replies everyone! I def see whatcha saying with the heat source info, will change to a lamp asap. I did make sure temp at chick height was 92 degrees but with heat from below...Yeah, will keep with the yoke, even tho I live in a small town, only place around for supplies is ACE...all they had was the electrolyte mix and antibiotic mix. Was gonna grind the sees down with a hammer/etc but will hold off. Couple questions here: the chick, even tho it's plenty active...chirping-wise, it falls asleep very easily...this is just dehydration/malnourishment essentially, correct? Also noticed one little "tick" the chick does>>he tends to shake his head real quick almost like he's pecking at something in front of him but there is nothing there. I'm wondering if this is respiratory/sinus issues, whatcha think? Lastly, I can't believe my Grandma's dog killed the hen/other chicks...unreal timing cause I was gonna put the chick back yesterday/today! Of all things that dog (a great herding breed, Austrialian Sheperd) spent everyday with that hen and other chickens, would "herd" them back into the pen every evening...

The chick falls asleep easily and quickly because it's newly hatched, i.e., a very young baby. That doesn't indicate that anything is wrong. I find the way they do that to be hilarious. They kind of just waver a little and fall over right where they are and go to sleep. All babies do that. It will become more active as it grows.
