Great question! There are a few key differences between medicated starter feeds and an organic starter feed, which you should consider based upon the goals you have for your backyard flock.

If you are choosing to raise or feed your birds organically, then you cannot use a medicated starter feed. If organic is your preference, then you don’t have a medicated option. If organic is not a big concern and you want to protect your birds from coccidiosis, then a medicated starter feed would be your option. Now, if your birds were vaccinated at the hatchery, then you can feed them a non-medicated starter or the organic starter. Don’t feed the medicated feed to birds that have been vaccinated. The medication will kill the vaccine and render it useless.
