Anyone tried this brooder concept?

Every method works. They all have their faults and advantages. The reason I use a tote is because you can clean it with the sanitizer of your choice. I do not have a problem with over heating. I can see how some might. A chicago style brooder is a wooden tote turned upside down. (How is that not more of a oven than a tote right side up) at least the heat can escape from a tote . Nobody mentioned that.why? Becase people are only speaking of what they know. Instead of using Common sense. Of course big business is going to tell you that there hundred dollar piece of crap should replace what your dad, grandad, and great grandad used because it will kill your baby's. Well it didn't kill theirs and it won't kill yours if you use some common sense.

Not only is it easy to cover that MHP to keep it nice and clean, but, the Sunbeam Xpress pad can be machine washed. I'm glad there are many different brooding options, What works for 3RC will not work for me. And what works for me, will not work for her.

My grandparents wouldn't have dreamed of keeping chickens in a box in their house! They used a lamp in the barn for batches of straight run Leghorns and just processed the males. Of course, this arrangement also accidentally burnt the barn down one year...

Just weighing in . I will never ever use a Mother Heating Pad . it can't be sanitized . these are babies. I realize this is going to be an unpopular statement and goes against a lot of current popular enthusiasms on BYC. However , I would no sooner use a Mother Heating Pad then I would let a baby walk around all day in a dirty diaper. The sweeter heater on the other hand hangs from the roof. It is easily disinfected.
As far as tote problems, every single one I read about was because of management error by the owner. that's one big reason why BYC is here . to help newcomers learn how to brood their chicks. Sure when one is a newcomer , one is going to make mistakes. that's part of the learning curve. However, I don't think we can solve all those problems just by dumping the tote and lamp. Instead, we need to educate proper use of them.
I do like the idea about brooding in the coop but I don't have the facilities for that here.
Best,
Karen

The Sunbeam heat pad that most of us use as our MHP, are liquid resistant and machine washable. They're no more difficult to keep clean than cloth baby diapers. Besides, with my setup they only poop on the towel covering the top not on the heat pad itself. .

No one mentioned that because thats not how they work. The chicks are not trapped inside it.
Youre right its a box upside down but it is on legs so theres a gap around the bottom so the chicks can get under it for warmth, hang out around the edges to get some warmth or get out from under it and away from it to cool off.
It is used inside a larger container and is just the heater part of your brooder.
Its point is to hold the heat inside instead of letting it escape like an overhead bulb does. Pretty much just like using bulbs but it takes less to keep the temp where you want it.

Well, your views appear to often ignore reality and more often than not pushing one product or another. Do you own a farm supply chain or something?

I just spend a lot of time studying the latest scientific trends. I warned my views wouldn't be popular among some enthusiasts here. I would rather raise my chicks with the latest scientific methods. No farm store or supply outlet here.
Best,
Karen
