My dad keeps telling us that guineas are quite dumb and will end up as road kill as they like to run straight for the road. What are your opinions/experiences with this?

I live in South Africa and we have wild guineafowl here. Yes they do tend to run across roads just before a car drives past and some don't make it... my advice is keep them away from a very busy road.:)

I also live in SA, i have bunch of 18 guneas, 11 hens and7 males.8 muscovy duck and 16 peafowls 3 turkeys and 4 greylag goose.

our guineas like crossing raod BUT THEY NEVER GOT KILLED because we have placed sign crossing birds next to our gardens. they love freeranging far away, especially during the laying season

Putting up a sign is a good idea! There is a busy road near us where the guineas often cross so a sign would help

Unfortunately where we live even throwing out spike strips doesn't help so our guineas may have to be contained in a large 'guinea tractor' of sorts. The people here think they are running some sort of NASCAR race.
