You are right! At least four or five sq. ft. per bird, and a covered run that can be partially enclosed, maybe with clear plastic, in winter to block the wind and snow. Bigger is always better, and you've got potentially months of snow and winter to cope with every year. Mary
 
If they are free ranging, it would be fine, but considering the winter months, I think a 10x10' coop would do much better.
