Sorry to post again but I have some pics that I was hoping someone could tell me the sex of my Muscovy x Indian runner. It's the large black and white one. I always thought it was a girl but she's never layed any eggs and yesterday she appeared to mate with a new girl I introduced

I need to know if I have two drakes cause if I do I want to get rid of one. Maybe @misslydia could help as I know you're very knowledgeable on the Muscovy topic.

Doesn't really matter what gender since it's pretty improbably that the bird in question is able to produce viable offspring. Muscovy are an entirely different species from mallard-derived breeds, like Runners. Muscovy crosses are 'mules'. Even if male, he won't be able to fertilize any eggs.

Very true.

Thanks for the replies, my fear is them mating with her too much and hurting her or something as it would be two drakes to the one girl? Or Do two drakes and one girl sometimes work out ok? @junebuggena @misslydia

When you saw this duck on the female did you actually see any mating? see the penis which you cannot miss. It could have just been a dominance thing which females do to each other. Next time you see the one on the female watch to see if anything actually happens. Then you'll know. Very hard to pick sex of mixes unless the mix get the tail curl how old is this duck? what type of quack does the duck have?

@misslydia it is about 1year old. I believe it is a male as I finally heard its hissing this morning,it seems the new girl has brought out his personality. So if it were you would you get rid of one drake? I haven't seen any sexual behaviour since this first occasion yesterday. I have to go out today and tonight so I'm a bit scared to leave them all alone together.

Your ratio is def off can you get more females or would your choice be to just rehome one drake even if you do that you still would need a few more females. Duck mating is rough on just one lone female whether you have just 1 drake or 2. How is your Muscovy drake treating your Runner mix? Sorry I wasn't on last eve to answer your question.

Thanks @misslydia
Ok I think I will have to re home the Muscovy drake (he's my favourite though

) as he is the one who has been what I thought was mating my runner mix all the time and trying to mate my chickens. The runner mix has always been such a gentleman I didn't even know he was a male. I will have to re home my Muscovy drake and get another female. So sad though as the Muscovy drake "Buggy - the bug monster" (my 3yo son named him) is so impressive. He gets so happy when he sees me coming and is so attractive to look at with his black and green and purple sheen. What a bummer!

I am sorry I know these are hard decisions I have had to make a few myself. But we have to protect the rest of our birds too. Too bad you can't keep them both but I def understand.
