Hi! I want to make my first foray into backyard poultry, but I don't want to order the 25 chick minimum that McMurray requries. I only want about 6 birds or so. Does anyone know of a source that doesn't have a minimum? I'm willing to pay more per chick, etc. I'm looking into Wyandottes or Rocks.

Please let me know!

Ideal only has a $20 order minimum. You might try them

The reason for the minimum is so the chicks can keep each other warm, comfortable and safe. You wouldn't want just a couple small chicks rolling around in a box, cold. Ideal has a $20 minimum, but they will still send extra chicks in the box for their safety. I think MyPetChicken.com has a very small minimum, and I've heard that they box them differently for safety.

I see, that's why there's a minimum...for warmth. Hm. I may have to post a new topic elsewhere looking for specialty poultry farms in Mississippi. Maybe I can just drive there.
