I have read on a website that sells chickens here in New York State (local farm - no shipping) that chickens are sold in lots of six or more ONLY in accordance with State Law.

I can't find any information on this law.

When I set up my little chicken home I will not have room for six. I will have room for three, maybe four.

Am I going to run into this problem with any places that I want to buy from?

Yes NY has that silly law.

I did look it up but don't remember where it was... I think it was under the agricultural laws.... I want to add another two or three myself but not 6.

It was passed to try to discourage people from buying cute little chicks at Easter then abandoning them.

Try to find someone else who wants some chicks near you and hook up with them.

Or try to find someone who sells started pullets.

Yes, it's true, but if you buy it from someone they often will just charge you for 6 and let you walk away with however many you want <6. I think it also may apply to just chicks. I took the 6 and just ate the one when it got big.

Ah - thanks everyone. May change how big my hen house is going to have to be because I'm not going to be able to eat my chickens

. I get too attached and I KNOW I'm going to have many ancient old non layers eventually.

I wonder if a private chicken place would work with me if I was able to prove my accommodations and intentions were good.

There's an age limit on the 6 chick minimum. I want to say 12 weeks...after that as few as you want.... If you can find them!

Like I said it's been a while since I looked. I couldn't believe it when the local Agway old me that so I looked it up.

A local breeder may help you out. One did for me. He understood I had 3 already and didn't want a huge flock.....

Well now I'm addicted.... and may hatch a few this spring

Thanks! I did find a local breeder near the Town of Macedon that is willing to work with me. They also explained the age factor.

That's good news.

I'm in the Finger Lakes Region and am hoping to get Buff Orps or Wyandottes.

I'm planning on purchasing Buff Orp's & Black Australorps& maybe a couple of Delawares.

would love to share an order as some of the hatcheries have minimum shipments that are much more that what I need- often they require you to buy 25- and I'd only want about 8.

sens me a note if you're interested in sharing an order.

6 min in Va too. It is to prevent all the cute litte chick purchases at easter and then no one wanting to deal with the big chickens months later. If you buy 6 you should know what you are getting in to.
