I was told by my feed store to feed them non medicated duck feed. Game bird feed is very expensive. I know that chicks do well on non medicated duck feed, I have raised them on it before. Now I don't know if this info is right, never raised quail before, but have some coming in May. I am assuming I am just going to buy non med duck feed for all, since I have the same delemna as you:>)

I gave mine meat bird crumbles and I've done chick starter when the store ran out. I had to grind it up in the blender to get it small enough for them to eat. Then after a few weeks I added some bird seed to the feed. They went crazy over it.

a 50lb bag of 30% gamebird feed (quail, pheasants and turkey) went for about 18$?? I think. Got it at the local grain elevator. When my buttons were little, i had to grind up the feed in my wife's food processor.... OOOPS.... bad time to tell cuz she's reading over my shoulder going UUuuuuuuh Huh.

I think Monarch, in one of her threads says that she uses 24% and adds cat food for added protein? I may have those facts wrong tho, ask her!

right now all we raise is quail -- buttons, corts, and now bobwhites

when mine are small I use non med chick feed add water to make a paste/mash stuff ( no need to grind it than ) and as they get older I reduce the amount of water until they are eating it dry.

when they get older they get a mix of 30% game bird feed and parakeet seeds along with other treats like cooked rice, veggies, mashed potatoes, and canned dog food ( once in awhile )

so far all mine do great with the current menu and are laying nice eggs and produce really healthy babies.

I forget the percentage of my feed protien to be honest but I know it's too low for quails, so I suppliment with ground up kitten food and feed it to them every other day to once a week just depending on how I feel.

Anywho, nonmedicated feed is best. I feed Dumor in chick starter and grower finisher to my quails. The starter is for ducklings, quails, and chicks. The grower finisher is for ducks, quails and chickens.

Still doesnt have enough protien in either for quails and other game birds but i dont mind supplimenting with kitten food, boiled eggs and insects

I use Dumor chick starter, and I don't ever grind it up, and they never have an issue, not even the day old button chicks. Granted, once in a blue moon, there will be a full sized pellet, and they obviously can't eat that, but the normal crumbles are fine as they are.
